Soundforge

Soundforge is a multi-media installation that combines video, audio and sculptural elements in an interactive work that explores forging as an act of both fabrication and percussion. Viewers are initially confronted by video of forging synchronized with a 16 minute percussion composition. The video alliterates the act of striking in both music and metal fabrication, emphasizing the role of the hand in both activities.

Proceeding into the gallery space the audience is able to use custom hand-carved wooden mallets to play three different hand-forged steel keyed instruments. Each key is tuned to complement the musical score, allowing viewers to easily and successfully engage the work. It is also through striking that viewers help complete the work.

Soundforge is the result of a two-year collaboration between metalsmith Gabriel Craig and composer Michael Remson.
